Jesus commanded His disciples to go and make more disciples. This video "Making Disciples," is the second of a two-part series and is a 17-minute introduction to the spiritual and practical process of intentional multiplication by Sam McVay, Jr.
Matthew 28:18-20: 18And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
This is the global mandate of the resurrected King to His disciples throughout the Church Age. It is clear from the Scriptures that:
Jesus builds the Church (Mt. 16:16-19).
We make disciples (Mt. 28:18-20).
Two Primary Parts to Making Disciples:
Baptizing Them into the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Being Born Again by the Holy Spirit)
Teaching Them to Obey All the Commands of Jesus (Training to Obey the Holy Spirit)
This is a very intentional process that can involve meetings, but it is done best in the context of Spirit-led relationship, involving one-on-one interaction much like a father to a son. It is important that we understand the difference between being “salt” and “light” 24/7 and making disciples. Disciple-making is not just a random moment it is intentional and thorough in process. Biblical disciple-making is not programmed; it is a spiritual process that follows the model of Jesus. It is the process of teaching someone how to obey the living commands of Christ through an active and living relationship with His Holy Spirit. There is no handbook. It is a spiritual process of transferring the DNA and Life of the King into another, as led by the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to do the same with others.
Our working definition of a disciple is:
A disciple is a Spirit-transformed, wholehearted follower of Jesus who grows to bear fruit and multiply.
A disciple lives out the Adamic blessing of Genesis 1:28.
A disciple lives out the Abrahamic covenant promise to multiply and possess the gates of enemies (Gen. 22:17).
A disciple lives out the life and ministry of the God-Man, Jesus Christ, who gave the majority of His ministry to making disciples by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus showed us how to make disciples. The Gospels are the ultimate discipleship manuals. Jesus moved through a process that involved:
Come and See
Come and Follow
Come and Do It with Me
Go and Report Back
Go and Multiply in the Nations
Making disciples is the practical way that Jesus brings and spreads His Kingdom in the nations.
Making disciples fulfills the prophecies of the ever-increasing Kingdom of God on earth.
Making disciples is highest mission on Planet Earth and should be center-piece in every believer’s life.
This is only an introduction to making disciples. For further study, please check out our eighteen-session series on the Great Commission here. May the Lord bless you as you set your hearts, minds, and lives to fulfill the global mandate of the resurrected King: to make disciples of all the nations.
